I've got a PC running Win7 downstairs where I do not have any ethernet cables, so I got a WDNA3100 USB adapter so the PC can access my home network. For the first two days, it worked perfectly fine. Then all of a sudden it stopped working.
First thing I noticed, the light on the adapter was off. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in. The adapter came back online, and was able to detect my home network, but when I tried to connect it would say "unable to connect" despite having full signal strength--I checked my other 3 computers on the network and the connection was fine.
I figured this was a driver issue, so I downloaded the v1 drivers and ran them. After uninstalling the original drivers and installing v1, I plugged the adapter in, the light came on, but Win7 said "the drivers for this device were not correctly installed". So I open the software that came with the drivers, and it was unable to detect my network. I then noticed a program called WG111v2 which appeared out of nowhere. I tried running that as well but nothing would happen.
So I uninstalled the v1 drivers, but this WG111v2 program was still in the system, and would not appear in the Add/Remove programs list. Clicking uninstall from the Netgear folder did absolutely nothing so I just deleted the folder.
This time I downloaded and installed the v3 drivers. Still got the "drivers for this device were not correctly installed" message. The software still couldn't detect my network. So then I check the Device Manager, and see that the adapter is showing up as a generic "USB 2.0" device, and says that drivers are not installed despite the fact that they are indeed installed. So I hit "update drivers" and manually point to the drivers folder that was installed. Still didn't work.
After this I uninstall everything again, and try to manually add the device. "Add New Device" in Win7 fails to pick it up, so I go to Start and run "hdwwiz" for the Hardware Wizard and try to manually add the device as a network adapter. After pointing the wizard to the .inf files in the drivers folder, it just sits there and the "Next" button is grayed out so I can't continue.
What in the world is wrong with this thing?
Interesting note about the WG111v2 software, the version number is actually 1.0.0.185, not 2.0, and I still can't figure out where that software came from or why it won't run or even uninstall.
