Today I wanted to check for updates. There was a new utility version for my Mac (v3.1.0.3). I never had problems with the old versions before (v1.0.0.13 or .11).
When I installed the new version and want to start it, no network could be found. The program just stuck. There was only the red ball. So I must kill the process by hand.
So I thought... ok... just uninstall and reinstall the old version. After I started the old tool again, it also didn't work any more. There was the same problem like with the new powerline-tool. I also must kill the process.
After hours of research I found out, that there seem to be a permission problem. When I'm running the tool with admin rights out of terminal (sudo), than the tool works perfectly. Also when I was creating a new user and install the program with the new user. But I want to figure out what went wrong!
What I already did:
- Repaired permissions.
- Cleaned all my caches.
- Tried a complete uninstall.
I uninstalled the follwowing files:
/Applications/NETGEAR Powerline Utility.app
/Users/xxx/Library/Preferences/PIB.db
/Users/xxx/Library/Preferences/com.Intellon.PowerPacket.plist
/Users/xxx/Library/Preferences/com.Intellon.PowerPacket.plist.lockfile
/Users/xxx/Library/Application Support/PowerPacket/
/Users/xxx/Library/Saved Application State/com.Intellon.PowerPacket.savedState
Maybe I missed something???
I also realized, when I'm starting the network tool with my new user account, I must always enter the admin-password. With my "old" account there is no password request any more. The network tool is just stucking. (maybe the password request is "hidden" and I can select it???)
So I think it is an issue of the new powerline utility during the installation process (maybe some permission changes??). But what I don't understand is why I cant reinstall and run my old networking tool any more. Maybe the changes made by the installation of the new utility affect the permissions in some way, so I also couldn't run old versions any more.
Sure I could create a new user-account and make a migration of my old user-account. But I want to know what messed up my system. I am running Mountain Lion. (10.8.2)
Maybe somebody else has similar problems?
Hope somebody could help.
