D6300 modem/router WiFi - no access to internal network

I have never had so much hassle with a modem/router before. This is an interesting problem and I can't believe I am the first to run into this issue - I am looking for the what have I missed before I send this back as too hard.

Setup is as follows, D6300 modem/router acting as a modem, and DHCP server which provides IP numbers for the internal network which is a mix of wired and wireless devices. Due to the size of my house I also have a WNDR3700 router which is working as a wired switch and wireless access point for a dual network. I use the same SSID name for the two wireless devices but have the router wireless network on different channels to the D6300.

The D6300 connect to my ADSL 2+ service and is getting good connections and uptime - that is a plus. On the network connected are two servers, music and video.

I am using two devices to trouble shoot the issue, apple TV and ipad 3. The wireless network from the D6300 on a fresh boot will sometime shows the music and video servers - I always have access to the internet on wireless. The ATV2 is JB and looking for plex servers for video - if I hard wire the ATV2 it runs with no issues and see the plex servers, change back to wireless and they disappear but you can still get to the internet. Using my imac with home sharing via itunes I have the same issue. The wireless network is blocking access to the internal network.

Using the ipad (which can work on both G and N networks) I get exactly the same issue - take the ipad down to the back of the house and reconnect to the other access point and all works.

This morning I turned on the guest network which has the switch to allow access to the internal network but ran out of time to confirm if it works long term or at all.

Have I missed a setting? Anyone else have this issue - I have the same issue with my Logitech music server to a squeezebox - on wifi it can not be found, hard wire and it appears. connect to the other access point and it appears.

For a device I paid $295AU for I would expect it to work, in Australia there is no new firmware I am running the first version.

Any ideas, apart from return it and hope the shop accepts it just does not work.
