Adding Netgear WN2500RP to WNDR3700

I have ordered the WN2500RP Dual Band Wireless range extender to use with my WNDR3700v3 Wireless router to increase my range. I want to be able to access my wireless network from my house accross the street (160ft). The online documentation and fact sheet for the WNDR3700 states that they tested the router and achieved connection at 197ft. At 160ft inside my house the laptop sees the signal between 6-11Mbps sometimes it connects and sometimes not. There are no physical barriers between my grandmother's house (where the network is established) and my house. The room in which it is setup is NOT in direct line of sight with my house; there is aslo a garage built onto the house the signal must travel through. I have tested the signal strength in the garage and it is as strong as being next to the router. I can walk to my house and stand right outside my window and connect at 30Mbps, so I know the signal extends to that point. It just seems to drop once inside. I would like to know if the range extender will help if I connect it at my house. Does there have to be a considerable signal strength before the extender will function?

Also would it be better to use two range extenders, one at her house in the garage (window in direct line of my house) and the other at my house?
