I am in serious need of help. I have no clue about routers! Let me explain my situation. We had a terrible lightning storm on Sunday and had several strikes damage some items including our router and modem. We had our ISP come out on Monday and they checked our modem (it was bad) so they gave us a new one and checked our connections.
I purchased a very inexpensive router and it was terrible, so I returned it and purchased the WNDR3700 V3. The connection is slightly better, but the download and upload speeds are terrible. We had a very old router and our speeds were fantastic, so not sure what is going on.
I live in the 2 story town home. The router/modem are downstairs and the computers are in the room directly upstairs. *Same setup we used to have*
We called ISP and they had us check the modem speeds and everything was fine.
I e-mailed Netgear and there suggestion was to change the MTU. I tried 1492, 1400, 1358, and 1300. Some were slightly better than others.
I then called Netgear. Here is what they had me do.
First, he had me go to advanced wireless settings and change the fragmentation lengths on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz to 2305 and the CTR/RTS values on both to 2306.
When the speed was worse he told me to update the firmware and call back. I purchased the router yesterday and it updated itself.
I called back and received another tech person that had me change to channel 11 and said to wait a few days. She said that as long as I can open webpage that it is working. I find this ridiculous!!!! I am not just looking to open up a web page.
We use the wireless to connect 2 IMacs, 2 iPhones, PS3, Wii, and an Apple TV.
I ran a speed test on testmy.net and here is what I got (this is with the computer plugged into the router downstairs as advised by tech support):
