Hi,
I have a netgear dg834 v4 wireless g router with integrated adsl modem. I
had dsl but stopped service and instead got a sprint mobile broadband
device. I was wondering besides buying a mobile broadband router, how I
could use my dg834 with the sprint device. I looked for solutions and could
only find how to hook up "wired" to a computer and use the router to share
internet to other devices. I wanted to not have laptop connected to router
at all by ethernet, just use it wirelessly. I figured out how to share internet
of sprint device 3g/4g to my router "wirelessly" so basically the router is only
plugged in to ac power, and any client device that is alllowed to connect to
it has internet access, wired or wirelessly. The only thing is that you have to
have the computer with the mobile broadband device on all the time but at
least it works wirelessly and you can move that computer anywhere as long
as the router can communicate with it. So here are the steps, I also figure
this will work with any wireless router and 3g/4g device.
First you need a computer with 3g/4g device connected and a wireless
adapter connected as well. Make sure your wireless router is configured with
whatever settings for wireless access, except make sure to disable dhcp and
use an ip address for example 192.168.0.1, make sure it doesn't conflict
with other routers that you have. On the computer with the 3g/4g device
you will need to configure ics (internet connection sharing).
Windows 7 (not sure about vista)
In start button , run, of windows, type regedit. This brings up windows
registry. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\SharedAccess\Parameters
For ICS, give a different scope address/backup such as 192.168.5.1, give
standalone dhcp address different as well like 192.168.7.1.
Windows XP
I've forgotten what I had to do on xp, but since it doesn't have the above, you might not have to do that at all.
Now, connect 3g/4g device to internet and then share internet to wireless
adapter by going to the Network Connections window. Right-click the 3g/4g
device that is connected to internetand select Properties. Then select the
Sharing tab, check the "Allow other network users to connect through this
computers Internet connection", choose your wireless adapter and ok. Then,
you will need to wirelessly connect the wireless adapter to router. Meaning
connect to wireless network from that router you configured. You should
have in tray icon area of windows the wireless icon with bars like it is
connected to internet. If all is well, take a different computer or more and
connect to router wired or wirelessly. They all should be able to connect to
internet. Hope this helps somebody. Let me know if it works for you!
